Let’s Go Green With Nigeria At 50

Nigeria is among the countries in the world where the color green plays a very important role. From the simple landscape to the exotic and untouched resources of the great nation, the color green is not lost. The Nigerian flag is a rectangular strip divided into three equal parts. The main colors are in green. This represents the land and agricultural potential of the county, while the color white represents peace and unity.

The Coat of Arms of Nigeria is presented on another platform that gives dignity to the color green. The two large horses lie on a base known as “Cactus spectabilis” – a wild flower that grows in many parts of the county. Green is a color that represents life. It is the color of growing grass, or the leaves of most plants. Choosing the color green for Nigeria is not a mistake. When you take a good look at the nation itself, there is a clear indication that God has greatness in mind in allowing a nation like Nigeria to exist. Although the country has experienced so many troubles, yet God is interested in the affairs of Nigeria.

Going green means living with eternity in mind in whatever you do. This is exactly what our Founding Fathers did. They lived their lives so well that they could share everything by “FOREVER”; the world could not confuse or distract them. They really had one eye on life that knows no end – they were looking for a city with foundations, whose Builder and Maker is God. They were led towards heaven, To be at home with the Savior who bought them with the price of His blood. They actually equated the word “GREEN” with “ETERNITY” – the eternal past and the limitless future – forever back, and forever forward. They understood that the glory of heaven is eternal and so they decided to shape a glorious country for us.

Their philosophy and way of life should challenge us to see beyond the horizon – beyond the present to eternity; weigh things carefully and ask a piercing question to reveal the options and appearances that abound in a world that has gone awry. Before we do things today, do we ask ourselves if those things are worth it, or if they have eternal values? The things we do today have a way of affecting our eternal destiny. Nigeria is a country built on godly principles. Principles that do not suggest abandoning social responsibility or acts of kindness as we see today. Every small act of kindness is infinitely valuable in the eyes of God, because He rewards, with eternal benefits, the giving of a cup of water to one of His Own, and blesses the one who does any good work even the smallest of’ to His. brothers! The old worn out cliché is that one could be so heavenly as to be of no earthly use. Earthly people are those who are of no earthly use to the kingdom of God.

To become truly green and remain what we were made to be, we must try to find the true value of our existence as people in a great nation under one God. To find the true value of anything – any object, pursuit, relationship, possession, investment or anything else, we must share it with “FOREVER”. If you would estimate an apparent “tragedy” correctly, weigh it on the scale of eternity. I read something like this somewhere where it is said that no tragedy is so great or unbearable if it has not adversely affected the eternal well-being of its object. Do you know that the many pleasures and treasures we seek today that seem attractive, lose their value the moment we do simple arithmetic with them? Why then do we believe in green but work with rusty iron? Going green at 50 requires simple arithmetic – divide it by eternity, and it’s endless forever! Also discover that money which has led so many of us astray, can seem like the ultimate until you weigh it on the balances of eternity. Also, sex and hedonism can blind, but only until they are shared with forever.

The principle of life demands that we look back on our individual lives whether we are really as green as we are led to believe. We could have been deceived by an accident of nature. Or does going green require the ugly causes happening in the country today? Where do kidnappings, armed robberies, bombings, illegal imprisonments, extrajudicial killings, mudslinging, and ethnic bias come from? Certainly, these are not part of our green nature! These are distractions carefully designed to rob us of our part in the land of our inheritance. But in the midst of all these, it is a pleasure to know that our country is still a virgin. The leaves are still green, and life is happening in every part of the nation. Nigerians should not give up; going green is a task that must be accomplished. Let us put all our hands on deck to build this new world power! God wants Nigeria to move out of a life of lack and even abundance to a life of abundance. To accomplish this, God quickly points each of us to His unchanging word – the Bible. In the Bible, we understand the amazing entity and its benefits for us. The color GREEN is among the best things that God gave to man in creation. With the color doing wonders in the nature of Nigeria today, God has put something special in our hearts and hands. And so, our future depends on our ability to recognize and use what we have.

This knowledge of a clean and GREEN nation is the answer Nigeria has to her so many needs in life. This is the ticket out of poverty – the passport to prosperity. Because the color green does not mean acquisition but creativity, your true prosperity will come if you are not determined to acquire wealth instead of creating wealth. As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Independence, my prayer for Nigeria and Nigerians is that they should learn today how to tap into God’s knowledge and unleash their creativity. To be truly great, Nigeria and indeed Nigerians must look GREEN as the color of the country depicts – always always ready to share everything they do with “FOREVER” to determine its real worth or value . These are the hidden treasures that we have not realized we carry inside us. Let us set aside time to preserve and maximize this: going GREEN with Nigeria @ 50 is only possible when we look beyond time (the present) to eternity!
