Indonesia Cup Football Final – Referee Substitution, Twin Champions Proposed?

When it comes to football, it is well known – at least to those football enthusiasts out there – that a referee is the highest leader of the game. This means that whatever decisions a referee makes considering what happens during a football match, his decisions are absolute and cannot be protested in any way by the players of both teams or by the spectators as well as any other non-holding officers. the rights to do so.

However, things did not seem to be going that way for referee Jimmy Napitupulu while officiating today’s Indonesia Cup final football match between Sriwijaya FC and Arema held in Solo. Today, on Sunday, 1 August 2010, many of his decisions during the first half were protested by the spectators who were full of the Manahan Stadium in Solo, the stadium where the last game was held.

However, the highlight happened when Jimmy Napitupulu decided to show a red card to one of Arema’s players, Noh Alam Shah, in the first half, leaving Arema to play with only ten men. The referee showed the player a red card for raising his leg too high in the air and kicking Precious Emuejeraye, who plays for Sriwijaya FC, in the face.

Unfortunately for the referee, this caused the spectators – Arema fans, needless to say – to go crazy. In this last game, it was not difficult to find Arema fans here and there as they were packed in the stadium. Following this incident, Central Java Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Alex Bambang Riatmodjo, requested at the end of the first half – which ended 0-0 – that officials substitute the referee. He also said that if this could not be allowed, he would rule out the final Indonesian Cup football match.

According to him, the reason was to prevent riots from happening because of the madness of Arema fans. However, as a matter of fact, it was unlikely that there were any signs of rioting at the particular time. When asked by one of the reporters on site reporting on the final match, this chief police officer mentioned that it was not a problem for PSSI officers to go home and that the issue of security was a matter for the police.

The thing is he may not know that Jimmy Napitupulu is a FIFA certified referee and has a reputation for officiating many football matches in Indonesia. With FIFA certifying the referee, it means that the referee has what it takes to lead a football match as it should be. FIFA certification also means that the referee knows the rules of football matches in detail, what to do if players foul and when to show yellow and red cards. Needless to say, FIFA only certifies a referee that the world’s leading football federation can trust.

However, after the first half ended, the match officials had to focus their attention on this rare problem. This also caused the second half to be stopped for more than an hour. There were also rumors that a solution of twins might actually be due to this particular problem.

However, this was very funny. Even Arema’s own Dutch coach, Robert Rene Alberts, didn’t even mind the referee’s decisions. So, why should Inspector General Alex Bambang Riatmodjo even have bothered to deputize the referee at all? Arema’s coach was even willing to continue the game with only ten men on his team. The coach said it was a shame that such an incident had to happen as Indonesia is a beautiful country with very good people. Therefore, he added that Indonesian people should try to become more professional when it comes to football. Meanwhile, Sriwijaya FC coach Rahmad Darmawan pointed out that it really didn’t matter if they won or lost the final match. What really mattered instead was whether the players of both teams played fair or not. This coach also said that in case Arema won the game after all, he would be happy to congratulate the Arema players and coach. So, once again, fair play was far more important than winning.

Of course, this event is very strange and one of a kind. As a matter of fact, there are no such things as substitute referees or twins in a football match across the world. At least, that’s the way a football game is supposed to be. But Indonesia seems to be an exception. There was also a rumor that sometime in the 70s, some incident like this also happened during one of the Indonesian football matches. At that time, the final solution taken was to have two champions. Then, twins also emerged during the last PON held recently before this particular final match of the Indonesia Cup was held.

Unfortunately, if things like this continue to happen in Indonesia, it is likely that FIFA will ban this country from hosting its own football game independently. Of course, this is not something a country is likely to want to go through. With that being said, PSSI – which stands for Persatuan Sepakbola Seluruh Indonesia – and the rest of the football officials in charge in Indonesia will have to work hard and make this a top priority for their homework so that things are like what happened during the Indonesian Cup final today will not happen in the future. One more thing, if you really don’t know what PSSI is, it is the main federation in charge of football in Indonesia.
