BWF World Championships 2018 LIVE: Chen – Viktor Delivered Nail-Biting Match

Chinese legend Chen Long avenged his loss – from last season’s Semi-Finals – against World No. 1 Viktor Axelsen in the Finals at the 2018 BWF World Championships in Nanjing, China.

Chen took almost an hour to eliminate the Dane in straight sets with 21-19, 21-11.

Starting with an early 4-0 lead, the 35-year-old Chen, with guile and correct fundamental judgments, mastered the rallies with all his experience over the 24-year-old to seal the first game.

In the second game, Chen never let Viktor get to him and maintained the huge gap by the pinnacle point.

Earlier, the third seeded Chinese Shi Yuqi entered the Semi-Finals after losing the match in three sets in the round of eight against Chou Tien Chen of Taipei in the 72-minute contest.

The Chinese who could win the first game with a lead of 14-11, remained stuck as their opponent cruised with 7 straight points and the game.

In the second game, Shi improved with the points from 6-4 to 13-4, but Chou somehow managed to catch his opponent with the trail of 14-16.

Shi played a sluggish game with the huge points gap against the Taipei player. However, third-placed Shi switched gears to level the score at 16-16, and then won three straight points.

Chou could take another point away before conceding to the Chinese.

What an incredible win from World No. 3 and Indian Olympic winner PV Sindhu who delivered a brilliant performance against Japanese powerhouse Nozomi Okuhara. The nail-biting 58-minute contest was a series of interesting rallies, cross-court drops, ferocious backhand shots and tactful deceptive shots.

Sindhu’s confidence and self-belief on the court prevailed over Nozomi’s wit and tactics as the talented champion finished the match with a winning scoreline of 21-17, 21-19. In both sets, Nozomi was strong enough to beat the Indian opponent, however, Sindhu’s patience and psychic reading worked well in her favor as she went in the flow and acted smartly.

In Men’s Singles, Sai Praneeth played well but went down giving the Japanese maestro Kento Momoto a good run in a neck-to-neck 38 minute match. Sai Praneeth lost the match in a score of 21-12, 21-12.

It’s a very good day for the Chinese Mixed Doubles players as they scripted the Finals with the most wins at the 2018 BWF World Championships in Nanjing, China.

Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui with the lowest seeds beat the Danes Mathias Christiansen and Christinna Pedersen with 21-15, 22-20 in the match that lasted for 53 minutes.

The Chinese ran behind in the first half of the opening game with a 7-11 lead with 6 straight points and then grabbed the game in their count. And the second match was a neck-to-neck encounter, which was justified by the Chinese.

In another Mixed Doubles match, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa end their challenge after losing to top seeded Chinese Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong 17-21. 10-21 in the Finals.

Satwik and Ashwini are the only unseeded pair left in the mixed doubles event who never got a chance to rally down the court from the start.

Second place at the Worlds in 2017, Zheng, was in good form in the back court while Yaqiong was very aggressive at the net. The cohesive pair poached well by mixing the pace from the back and at the net.

With all her experience, Ashwini gathered herself into the match, while teenager Satwik betrayed a few nerves with a couple of service faults and overhit shots in the opening game. But as the game progressed, the younger team rose well and this helped the senior to close the gap with 17-18.

Later, a service error from Satwik cost the match.

It was one-way traffic from the top seeds, who sailed to a slender 11-4 lead. The Chinese pair closed out the match with a comfortable win from Satwik’s mistakes, once again.

In another match, the English pair Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock lost to the Chinese star players Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping with 13-21, 18-21 in the match of 44 minutes.

The highlight of the game was the battle between the teams.
