Jackfield Pottery – Brilliant, Black Wares

Jackfield pottery is a type of earthenware known for its glossy black lead glaze similar to Japanese black lacquer wares. It was named after Jackfield, a town in Shropshire, England where a ceramic factory founded by Richard Thursfield produced extraordinary pieces of earthenware made of clay, glazed black and decorated with oil paint or gilt in 1713. Thursfield was succeeded by his son, Maurice, under whom the best examples of the craft were made between 1760 and 1772. During 1780, Thursfield’s pottery was sold and transferred to Coalport.

Early examples of Jackfield pottery can be seen with Jacobite inscriptions because Shropshire was a haven for the cult.

During the eighteenth century, Jackfield pottery was also produced in several other known centers for pottery, such as Staffordshire, by other great names in the history of pottery such as Thomas Whieldon and Josiah Wedgwood. Whieldon was credited with the development of Jackfield’s ware making. In Staffordshire, Whieldon is known to have developed the art of making Jackfield pottery, producing it using a red variety of clay and glaze with a more lustrous sheen. Soon the black glassware also began to be produced in Namur, Belgium.

Jackfield pottery is a high fired, thick and highly glazed ware which is usually thin walled. It is usually glazed on the inside as well as the outside. Tracing back to its beginnings in Jackfield, it was originally made from a gray to purple-black clay. Sometimes, in examples of pottery with lids, a glimpse of the color of the clay used can be seen. The usual motifs used for decoration were white sprig mouldings, flowers and scrolls (the scrolls often had initials). Jackfield’s wares first became popular as drinking mugs in pubs. Other common examples of Jackfield pottery are coffee or tea cups and pots, jugs and saucers.

Jackfield pottery was also in great demand during the Victorian Era – between 1837 and 1901. When Queen Victoria used black items to mourn the death of her husband, Prince Albert in 1861, the black sheen of Jackfield’s wares came into fashion. It was then that Jackfield goods became popular as gifts and souvenirs. They were usually marked in gold with the donor’s name on the left side of the article and marked with three fleur-de-lis-like slashes on the right.

Jackfield pottery was also known by many other nicknames such as Jackfield black, Jackfield-type, jet ware, Victorian jet ware, black ware and japan ware. Although the quality and production of this type of ware is said to have declined after the 1760s, its style was revived in the late nineteenth century and became popular in tea and kitchenware.
