Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve

The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is located in Cape Town, South Africa and is a treasure trove of unspoiled beaches, stunning scenery, beautiful picnic spots and timeless stories of its history and landmarks. The southernmost tip of the reserve ends at the majestic Cape Point which offers majestic views that will leave you breathless.

The Portuguese explorer, Bartolomeu Dias, came round Cape Point for the first time in 1488 and called it the ‘Cape of Storms’ because of its unpredictable weather and threatening storms. 10 years later, Vasco da Gama opened a new trade route with the East and India by navigating the same route and was renamed by King John 11 of Portugal the ‘Cape of Good Hope’ due to the considerable optimism generated by the new path.

At night and in heavy fog, the rocky shores became a huge danger for passing ships and the coast has become a shipping graveyard with almost 3000 sunken ships. The Portuguese built two navigation lights, Dias Cross and Da Gama Cross to honor the early explorers and warn passing ships of hidden danger. When lined up, the crosses point to Whittle Rock, a major underwater hazard, which has been the cause of many shipwrecks. In 1859, the first lighthouse was completed making navigation along this wreck littering the coast safer for nervous traders. The lighthouse still stands at 238 meters above sea level and is currently used as a central monitoring point for all lighthouses in South Africa.

To access this historic lighthouse, visitors can either catch a thrilling ride in the Flying Dutchman or challenge themselves with a brisk walk up the hill to the top. The lighthouse isn’t the only highlight you’ll encounter atop Cape Point. The rugged rocks, steep cliffs and panoramic ocean views will leave you breathless and the rich variety of fauna and flora will enchant you.

At the foot of the walk, Two Oceans Restaurant offers the best seafood and first class views. Shoppers are also in for a treat shopping for curiosities and souvenirs in the three curio shops.

Although Cape Point is definitely a must-see on your trip, there are many things to see and do in the park. A definite diversion is a visit to cultural and historical places such as the monuments dedicated to the great explorers Vasco da Gama and Bartolomeu Diaz. Spend the afternoon swimming, barbecuing or lazing around the beautiful picnic areas at Bordjiesrif and Buffels Bay tidal pools. Visitors to this World Heritage Site between June and October will be rewarded with breathtaking views of migrating Southern Right Whales that beach the Western Peninsula each year. These are not the only creatures to delight visitors in the park, the Cape of Good Hope is rich in local fauna and flora. The park has over 1100 indigenous fynbos species, which is the highest concentration anywhere in the world. There are also plenty of bird and mammal species, including the world’s largest antelope, the Eland, and the Cape Mountain Zebra. One of the best ways to enjoy the park is to go on foot and explore the many wrecks, sights and overnight trails.

Regardless of your age, fitness level or interests, there is something for everyone in this 7800 hectare park and its 40 kilometer coastline.
