Andy Roberts – West Indies Fast Bowler

While cricket enthusiasts generally think that fast bowling involves more brawn than brains, one West Indian fast bowler put that notion to rest. Anderson (Andy) Roberts – former West Indies and Leeward Islands fast bowler – was a ‘thinking’ cricketer. Many considered him a strategist on the field. With a deceptively phlegmatic demeanor that hid his ferocity, Roberts managed to engineer the downfall of a number of batsmen during his playing days.

Born in Antigua on January 29th, 1951, Roberts began his first class career at the age of 19 for the United Islands team in the 1969/70 season. Although he was famous for his tricks in his later years, Andy Roberts bowled with speed and venom in his early years. His bowling prowess earned him a Test debut against England four years later in 1974.

Andy Roberts has the distinction of being the pioneering fast bowler of the West Indies pace strategy of four fast bowlers. Another distinction he had was being the fastest to reach 100 Test wickets (in 1977). Together, Roberts took a highly commendable total of 202 wickets from just 47 Tests at an average of 25.61. In one-day internationals, he dominated the batsmen to pick up 87 wickets from 56 matches at an even better average of 20.35.

Andy Roberts was primarily a fast bowler. However, it was not a rabbit with the bat. His batting prowess helped West Indies win a crucial World Cup group match against Pakistan. He joined Deryck Murray in an incredible 64-run stand that allowed the West Indies to hit Pakistan by at least one wicket. His contribution in that stand was 24 runs off 48 balls. Although Roberts was nowhere near a real ‘Number 11’ batsman either. His batting averages were all in double figures and he scored 10 first-class half-centuries – three at Test level.

Cricinfo’s Mike Selvey described Roberts as a bowler who never wore his heart on his sleeve. According to Selvey, Roberts hardly showed “a flash of emotion” whether he took a wicket or a batsman hit his delivery for a boundary. Apparently Roberts is too busy thinking and concentrating on his game.

Cricket commentators also praise Roberts for creating many delivery variations which – together with his speed – claimed the wicket of many a batsman. He mastered the slower delivery without changing his arm speed. He also used the bouncer very effectively and was considered a dangerous bowler (in the literal sense too) for it. Roberts’ variations allowed him to play until the age of 32, although he lost speed as the years went by.

By the time he stopped playing First Class cricket in 1974, Roberts was playing for a number of famous teams. New South Wales (Australia), Hampshire, Leicestershire (England), Leeward Islands and Combined Islands (West Indies) were the teams on its resume as well as the West Indies Test and ODI team.

Roberts remained involved in West Indies cricket as a regional manager and selector. He also holds fast bowling camps at venues across the region and is troubled by the decline of the West Indies fast bowling tradition he started. Apparently Roberts is still plotting a strategy to improve the number of fast bowlers in the region.
