Krishnamachari Srikanth, A Passionate Cricketor, At the Helm of Affairs

Krishnamachari Srikanth hails from an orthodox Brahmin family in south Madras. He was fiercely opposed and even defeated by his father in his childhood days for playing cricket by neglecting his studies. He was appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India as the Chairman of the National Selection Committee on 27/09/2008.

K.Srikanth has many qualifications for his appointment. He has a passion for cricket. He is known for his comments, opinions and sharp criticism of the players. He used to critically analyze the cricket teams for their performance in a cricket match judging them according to their merits. He is impartial, a beautiful commentator and a good columnist. He has his own website to tackle cricket. He was one of the ‘Kapils Devils’ when India won the cricket world cup in the year 1983. He was the top scorer with 38 runs, when India were bowled out for a paltry score of 187. Currently he is a brand ambassador Chennai Super Kings , the twenty twenty cricket team from Chennai. He led the Indian cricket team as India’s captain in the test series played between India and Pakistan in the late 80s. Under his captaincy, Sachin Tendulkar made his debut as a 16-year-old. So Srikanth has always been an ardent admirer of Sachin Tendulkar. Srikanth, who had rejected the offer of Chairman earlier in the year 2000, has now accepted the offer.

K.Srikanth has been appointed as the chairman of the cricket selection committee in a rather difficult background and circumstances. An India-Australia home test series is on the cards and the Australian team has already arrived with the aim of retaining the Gavaskar-Border Trophy in the upcoming Test series. Indian cricket board is resource rich. Cricket now has three formats in the game namely twenty over limited overs, ODIs and the traditional test matches. A veteran cricket stalwart, Srikanth is familiar with all three formats of the game. He also has first-hand knowledge of twenty cricket by virtue of his association with the Chennai Super Kings cricket team as its grand ambassador.

Given the current set-up of India’s Test team, Srikanth’s task is rather onerous. An aging captain in Anil Kumble, the problem of dealing with the four great but aging players like Sachin, Dravid, VVSLaxman and Ganguly, choosing a right captain for all the three formats of the game, pick a right and balanced team for the upcoming India. -Australia home test cricket series are the burning issues or issues that need immediate attention. Srikanth has to pay more attention to the aging quartet. Not to be swayed by their past achievements Srikanth has to take a firm decision of either picking them or dropping them considering their current form, physical fitness etc. Srikanth should not forget that Dilip Vengsarkars policy of raising the youth and grooming them has paid dividends. it may not be unwise in the twenty twenty and ODI formats of the game and maintain status quo in this regard. He needs to pay attention in order to give representation to every state but he should see that no candidate is chosen without real merit. Instead of placing a heavy burden on MSDhoni, the mantle of test captaincy can be given to some other player. Above all he should see that discipline of the highest order is enforced among players, especially during test matches without giving any room for laxity.

Considering all the above aspects, let us hope that K.Srikanth as a veteran of test and ODI cricket will do justice to his job, elevating the Indian cricket team to a higher plane.
