The Cape Town Diaries

Cape Town, a city that is considered one of the most beautiful places in the world, is a city that we have all heard about very often from people who love football. It has beautiful harbors and the city is an ideal stopover for pedestrians. Cape Town hosted nine of the 2010 FIFA World Cup matches at the Cape Town Stadium, also known as the Green Point Stadium. This huge stadium is a prominent feature on earth from a bird’s eye view Apart from football; swimming, rugby and cricket are among Cape Town’s favorite sports. The city has hosted the Pick ‘n Pay Cape Argus Cycle Tour which sees over 35 thousand cyclists on a 109km route around it and also a number of notable events including the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Cape Town is among the most multicultural cities in the world. About half of the population is White, while the other half is colored, with Blacks in the minority. The people of Cape Town hold an annual minstrels event on January 2 where teams of musicians march, carrying colorful umbrellas or playing musical instruments dressed in colorful costumes. The University of Cape Town runs its own radio station along with many other radio and television stations that broadcast in the city.

Cape Town, also known as South Africa’s most entrepreneurial city, is its second main economic center and also the third main economic hub. Many large companies have headquarters in it with many insurance companies, publishers, design houses, architects, trade groups and advertising organizations. Traveling in it is easy. Reasonable means of transport are available; taxis, buses, Integrated Rapid Transit and by train to move within the city or when going outside the city.

The city is located at the northern end of the Cape peninsula and is surrounded by steep cliffs, near verticals called Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head. The Lion’s Head is very famous for its incredible views of the city, its hour-long journey to the summit during the full moon and the launching point for paragliders because of its slopes. Just like Pen y Llew, Devil’s Peak has a number of walks on its lower slopes. A hike to the top is taken from the Saddle where the 360° is worth the climb. Climbing back down is very dangerous as many hikers have lost their lives taking the wrong route back down.

Cape Town’s mild, wet winters are from early June to late August while the dry, warm summers are from November to March. Here, it rains more in the winters than it does in the summers. It is one of the most biodiverse cities in the world because it is located where many microclimates and different soil types converge. Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, and False Bay, which is a popular site for whale watching, are not to be missed.

A popular tourist destination, many tourists visit Cape Town’s beaches which are also popular among the locals. One of the city’s most popular tourist attractions is the Port of Cape Town where tourists can shop in the hundreds of shops, visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, and watch ships enter and leave the docks or even sleep overnight in one of the townships.
