Zimbabwe Cricketers – Henry Olonga

Some sportsmen make more of a mark off the field than on it. This was certainly the case with former Zimbabwean fast bowler Henry Olonga. The first black cricketer to play for Zimbabwe had more than an interesting head of hair. He possessed character and raw talent that remained incomplete at the highest level. Olonga had the willingness and ability to bowl fast, although it was usually fast and inaccurate. Beyond that, he was the inspiration for young black cricketers in Zimbabwe before political instability destroyed his cricket.

Born in Lusaka, Zimbabwe on July 3rd, 1976, Olonga became the youngest player to represent Zimbabwe when he made his international debut against Pakistan in Harare in 1995. He had hurdles to overcome early in his career as he was not was flagged for ‘throwing’ in his first Test. Olonga also battled injuries during his career but became a fixture in the Zimbabwean side until his career ended for non-cricket reasons in 2003.

Olonga’s stats were average by world standards. However, he was playing for the world’s weakest Test team. From 30 Test matches – over seven years -, Olonga took 68 wickets at an inflated average of 38.52. His bowling rate in Test matches was respectable and he showed his destructive ability with Test best figures of 5/70 against India in Harare in 1998.

In ODIs, Olonga was effective, albeit a bit expensive. From 50 ODIs, he took 58 wickets at an average of 34.08. Although Olonga destroyed England in an ODI in Cape Town in 2000 with career best figures of 6/19, his finest moment was probably against India in the 1999 ICC World Cup in England. Zimbabwe captain Alistair Campbell entrusted Olonga to bowl the last over. It was an inspired move as Olonga picked up three vital wickets to dismiss India for 249 runs. Zimbabwe won by just three runs and progressed to the next round on the back of that win.

Henry Olonga knew how to overcome adversity, as he showed with his remodeled bowling steps and his battle with injury. However, he will also be remembered for his activity in the face of adversity. At the start of the 2003 ICC World Cup in South Africa, Olonga joined compatriot Andy Flower in a protest against the ‘death of democracy’ in Zimbabwe. They were wearing black armbands and causing a stir. That protest cut short Olonga’s international cricket career. He also had to seek refuge in England, which he then made his home, after failing to return safely to his homeland after that World Cup.

Olonga played only first-class cricket in Zimbabwe. His record of 156 wickets out of 66 matches is unfathomable. Still, Olonga made a mark as his country’s first and youngest black cricketer – at the time he made his debut. Olonga was always a kind gentleman also socially and politically aware. His protest with Andy Flower (who was white) was even more remarkable as he was a black cricketer from Zimbabwe protesting against Robert Mugabe’s ‘anti-white’ policies.

Since making his home in England, Olonga started cricket commentary on television. His voice and demeanor on and off the air reveal his cheerfulness and positive attitude to life. As a cricketer, Olonga may not have achieved much. However, he made a significant contribution to others through his determination, positive attitude and conviction. Olonga is a true role model and one of the game’s most recognizable personalities – even after his playing days ended prematurely.
