High School Wrestling: Peaking for the End of the Season

During my senior season of high school wrestling, I “peaked” at exactly the right time. I was a conference champion, a division champion, and a district champion. By winning the district tournament, I qualified for the state tournament. I was beaten in the first round 5-2 and never got the chance to wrestle-back. However, I had improved over the previous seasons. During my sophomore year, I placed 4th in conference and placed 3rd in sectionals. During my junior year, I placed 2nd in conference and came 3rd in districts. I always ran out of steam and motivation toward the end of the season and never qualified for the state tournament. What changed during my senior season?

First, I had much better control of my diet during my senior season. I am counting calories and losing weight slowly. I never went a day without eating. I was never starving or dehydrated. I didn’t feel weak towards the end of the season. I just keep getting stronger. So, my attitude was different too. I was confident and really wanted to qualify for the state tournament. The previous two seasons I felt weak and I didn’t want that bad enough.

How can a wrestler peak at the end of the season? Let’s explore things a bit.

Periodization

Periodization simply means planning your training for the season or even the whole year. The season is divided into different periods. Tudor Bompa says, “Usually peak performance is intended to be reached during the competitive phase and cannot be sustained forever.” Likewise, Mark Ginther says, “It’s impossible to maintain peak condition for more than a few weeks at the longest.” Of course, you want to win every game. Additionally, you want to be in excellent shape. However, you can’t be in top condition all season. Therefore, your coach will probably ask you to do more work early in the season. Towards the end of the season, you will probably do less work but at a higher intensity. Your ultimate goal is to peak for the post season tournaments such as sectionals, districts and states.

Conditioning

As I mentioned, your workload should decrease when you want to peak towards the end of the season. However, your workouts may be more intense. Intensity and brevity is the key. Towards the end of the season, you might start thinking more about game strategy. You might start practicing “situations” that might arise in a game. What do you do if you are ahead by one point in the bottom position with only ten seconds left in the game? You should most likely do stand up. You obviously don’t want to do a granny roll and try to pin your opponent. You need to be smart and hold on to that one point lead.

Technique

Drilling is important to get to the top. If you religiously drill your moves during the season, they will become second nature. Winning those post-season competitions will be easier if your technique is flawless and comes naturally.

Recovery

Recovery encompasses many things. Make sure you get enough rest. Ideally, you should be getting eight to ten hours of sleep each night. Some wrestlers find contrast showers (alternating hot and cold water) helpful after training. A hot bath before bed can be soothing and can help you sleep better. In addition, do not forget about nutrition.

Wrestling and intense conditioning deplete muscle glycogen and break down muscle tissue. So, after exercise make sure you eat some protein and carbohydrates. A whey protein shake and a fast-digesting carbohydrate source can be beneficial after a wrestling workout in terms of recovery.

Attitude

Are you excited and motivated or burnt out from the long run? I hope you are excited and motivated to win. How badly do you want to qualify for the state tournament? Those wrestlers with an extreme desire to win will probably wrestle at their best. Winning or losing is not the end of the world. However, if you don’t care if you win or have no faith in your abilities, then you will be at a disadvantage.

Anyone can be beaten. Dan Gable was beaten in his last college match. Rulon Gardner defeated Alexander Karelin who had gone undefeated for thirteen years in international competition. A University of Iowa wrestler named Matt Egeland was seeded eighth in the 1985 NCAA Wrestling Tournament, but finished 2nd. He defeated the number one seeded wrestler along the way. I had a teammate in high school that was seeded last in the district tournament, but beat the first seed and qualified for the state tournament. Anything can happen in postseason tournaments. Be confident.

taper off

Tapping means cutting back on your total training. This gives your body extra rest. You can still have short intense workouts. You can continue to drill and focus on your skills and strategy. But, the total amount of wrestling and conditioning should be reduced before that big post-season tournament.

Dan Gable and the University of Iowa

In Mike Chapman’s book wrestle hard, he discusses Dan Gable and the University of Iowa wrestling program. Coach Gable would sometimes have his wrestlers practice twice a day leading up to the NCAA championships. This seems to go against the idea of tapering, although I do not know how long these practices lasted and how intense they were. Coach Gable even had Ed Banach do a third workout at 5 am. Ed Banach won the NCAA tournament that year largely because of that extra practice where he drilled his takedown technique. Would you be willing to pay that price to reach the pinnacle of success? Do you remember what I wrote about drilling earlier? Drilling is paying off.

The film Hoosiers very inspiring. Before the state finals, the coach tells his team, “Forget about the crowds, the size of their school, their fancy uniforms and remember what got us here. Focus on the basics that we’ve gone over and over again on again and again, and the most important part, don’t get caught up in thinking about winning or losing this game If you put your effort and focus into playing to your potential, to be the best you can be, there is I don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of this game, in my book, we’re going to be winners!”

Earlier in the film, the coach says, “There’s a stipulation in tournament play; don’t talk about the next step until you’ve climbed the one before you.”

I think that is sound advice. Focus on your fundamentals in the postseason championship series. Take it one game at a time and be determined to wrestle with your potential.

In conclusion, climaxing can be complicated. Make sure you get enough rest. Drill your skills relentlessly. Do your higher volume workouts earlier in the season and shorter, more intense sessions as the season nears its end. Make sure you are mentally focused and confident in your abilities.

With a proper peak, you’ll be fresh, rested, and ready to wrestle your best!
