I have not been to India myself; however, thanks to the world becoming a smaller place and the multiculturalism of my community I had the opportunity to enjoy many delicious Indian foods. Many people think of spicy curry when they imagine Indian food, but when I think of Indian cooking the first thing that comes to mind is always the bread. The traditional name for Indian Fried Bread is Puri. Some cities in India reserve Sunday breakfast as the best time to enjoy this delicious treat. Usually a member of the family will travel to the nearest Sweet Shop, such as Bengali Sweets in Punjab, with a number of empty vessels or ‘Tiffin’. The sweet shop fries the bread fresh and then adds a selection of gravy to the Tiffin. Each of these gravy has a unique taste. Some are of the same consistency as a rich curry while others are more like a soup. The puri is used to scoop, dip or extinguish the contents of the Tiffin. The experience is pure pleasure and sweet shops are always packed with customers every Sunday. I will be sharing with you a great Indian fry bread recipe today. It’s very easy to make, you probably already have all the necessary ingredients. You can make your bread recipe bigger and better as you like, and I will do it next time.

3/4 cup of water

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon. vegetable oil

1/2 tsp. salt

2 teaspoons. baking power

Preparation Instructions for Making Indian Fry Bread

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt into a medium sized mixing bowl.

Add in the water and oil, mix everything together thoroughly to create the dough.

Once you have a lump of dough, take smaller golf ball sized pieces and flatten them on the counter. Sprinkle a little flour on the counter to make sure the dough doesn’t stick.

Flatten each smaller piece of dough; you can make a hole in the middle to make this bread more like a doughnut.

Heat the lard, shortening or your preferred cooking oil (About 3/4 inch deep) and fry each piece of dough for a minute or two, until they turn golden brown. The ideal temperature is somewhere around medium, you can adjust accordingly if your dough gets burnt before golden brown.
