Tennis: The Fed Cup

The Fed Cup, formerly known as the Federation Cup until 1995, is the tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup for women. The competition was launched in 1963 and coincided with the 50th anniversary of the International Tennis Federation. The competition gives tennis nations from all over the world the opportunity to compete in a team format at the elite level of women’s tennis.

As with the beginnings of the Davis Cup, competition between the USA and the UK paved the way for the evolution of the tournament as it is today. The inaugural event was held in 1963 at the Queen’s Club in central London and attracted a strong and competitive field of 16 nations to play for the first ever Federation Cup. The USA dominated the first event and have gone on to win the event 17 times over the years.

The competition had relatively humble beginnings and no prize money was offered until the late 1970s. However, commercial sponsorship changed this and Colgate became the main supporters of the event in 1976 followed by NEC from 1981 to 1994. NEC is also known for its commercial involvement with the Davis Cup as well and provided a remarkable level of support for its development and evolution. the respective competitions.

With the advent of commercial sponsorship the Federation Cup increased in popularity and by 1994 there were 73 nations competing within the format. For the individual tennis federations around the world it was seen as a great way to improve the competitive nature of tennis and also as a great advertisement for developing grassroots talent. As the popularity grew the Federation Cup became known as the Fed Cup and introduced a number of regional qualifiers which led to home and away matches being played around the world.

The format that exists today consists of an eight-nation World Group 1 and an eight-nation World Group 2 playing throughout the tennis calendar. This essentially means that only 16 countries will qualify for the World groups from all the candidates each year. This is an incentive for nations and their teams to continue to improve, develop and strive to reach the more competitive upper tiers. There is also the threat of relegation for losing teams.
