Metaphors For Growing Old

Metaphors are part of our everyday communication. Work is sometimes referred to as the coal face or the salt pit, and climbing the ladder, the greasy pole, or playing on the jungle gym are used in different ways to describe career development. And in the social world, an attractive person might be described as a knocker who bowls us over. We just have to hope like hell, though, that we don’t get caught out with our eyes looking like they’re going to pop out of our heads.

Metaphors are also used in relation to ageing. We’re talking about someone who’s been over the hill, or past their use by date. And, because Australians love their sport, it’s no surprise that sporting metaphors are used a lot in relation to ageing.

Cricket conversions are usually a prominent feature. It could be because cricket is Australia’s national summer sport. The guest of honor at the funeral could have had a good innings, provided of course he didn’t fall off the perch too soon. Scoring a century, or hitting a ton, is the goal of many who pad-up hoping to spend a long time at the crease. And, as we get older, we tend to let more and more things slip through the cracks: we just couldn’t be bothered to deal with them. Age comes with additional opportunities to be clean bowled, caught out, hit for a six, etc.

Sport has been described as the great leveller. It is important for us seniors that we stay on the ball: stay in the driver’s seat of our lives. And, even when someone doesn’t agree with our opinion (the ref. or ump., for example) they can be labeled as one-eyed.

If sports aren’t your cup of tea, there are plenty of other metaphors to borrow. If the game is cards, for example, we have to live with the hand deals and play those cards as best we can. If we hang in there, pretty soon we’ll be dealt a hand we like.

Have I mentioned that metaphors can be overused? Here are two that appeared in the press last week. The Australian cricket captain has been described as ‘carrying on like a pan whose lid has come off’. And a group of football fans were labeled ‘meatheads’.

Most people seem to have their favorite metaphors. What is yours?
