Betting on Betfair – The Different Types of Bets

Most of us are familiar with the simple win or lose forward bet, where if your pick wins, you do and if you don’t you lose. Most people also understand the concept of place betting when you bet on an event where there may be first, second and third place finishers. However, on Betfair there are also a variety of other bets you can place.

Golfers will be familiar with the concept of handicaps. These are designed to make all players more or less equal; well at least that’s the theory. Using handicaps helps make what could be one-sided events a little more even for betting purposes. For example recently the English football team had to play against Kazakhstan and Andorra to qualify for the World Cup. No one expected England to be beaten and they proved that with them winning 4-0 and 6-0. On Betfair you could have placed handicap bets on England winning.

The two most popular handicap bets are known as Asian handicaps as they were initially popular in the Far East. Now many customers from all over the world use them.

There are now really two types of Asian Handicap. The former gives a 1.5 side handicap which means they must win by 2 goals or more for it to be a bet winner. It also means that it is not possible for the result to be a draw.

In the second type of Asian handicap a side is handicapped by whole points +1.0, +2.0 and so on. In this event if a team is at a +2 handicap they must win by 3 clear goals. If with the handicap added, the result would be a draw, the bet becomes void.

Another type of betting is called Line Betting. This is when you bet on a certain series of events that happen or don’t happen. For example, in a football game if you think a team will get more than 10 corners in a game the line may be set at fourteen corners in the game. If they only get 13 corners then you win, if they get 15 corners then you lose. It’s a simple flat money bet.

A more complicated and dangerous bet is a Betting Range. Whether it’s goals, runs or contest scoring, you can “Buy” or “Sell” value. Cricket is a good example, you might think one side will score more than 200 runs and you buy the runs at £2 a run. For every run over 200 you will win £2 but if they do not reach the figure you will lose £2 for every run they did not score under 200. or for example if only 174 were scored you would lose £52. these are limits in place so you know the maximum and minimum winnings or losses you can get when you place your bet.
