A World Cup Guide to Munich

Munich – home to German football giants Bayern Munich – is the southernmost city in Germany to host matches from the 2006 World Cup finals. The city is set to build on its already strong reputation extremely important in world sport (the city was home to the crucial 1972 Olympic Games, the 1974 World Cup Final and the UEFA EURO’88 final) by staging the opening match of the tournament – Germany v Costa Rica on 9 June.

The stadium – known as the Allianz Arena – is actually located just north of the city in the Frottmanning district. It is easy to access. The A9 motorway connects the city to the new stadium, while Munich International Airport is served by the A92 – a motorway which crosses the A9 to the west of the airport.

Whether you’re approaching the stadium from the city or the airport, there’s certainly no risk of missing the Allianz Arena. Its mammoth translucent structure resembles a donut-shaped cushion fit for a giant. There really is nothing like it in Germany. Once inside the stadium don’t be surprised to find yourself looking around in wonder. The structure appears to have more in common with a futuristic spaceship than a football stadium. It is simply stunning.

Four things you must do in Munich

Apart from the World Cup, Munich offers a wealth of attractions for its visitors to enjoy. No matter how short your stay in the city is, here are four things you must do!

Visit a Beer Garden: There are plenty of them in Munich! After all, Munich has long been revered as one of the beer-making capitals of the world.

Try Bavarian sausage: Munich is the capital of Bavaria – a free state famous for its forests, mountains and one of the world’s largest car manufacturers…BMW or Bavaria Motor Works. It is also the birthplace of the authentic German sausage. Try the Weisswurt…you won’t be disappointed!

See the Nymphenburg: The Nymphenburg is a Baroque palace built in the 17th and 18th centuries. It offers a real insight into Bavaria’s royal past. The facade of the palace is three times longer than the Munich Olympic Stadium!

Take a walk through the English Garden: This 5km long green park is the outdoor center of Munich. It was built in 1789 and has many features including a classical style rotunda. If you are looking for peace and quiet in the center of Munich this is the place to be.

Arrival in Munich

Many of the world’s airlines fly directly to Munich International Airport. It is then a matter of following the A92 road directions to the city of Munich and/or to the Allianz Arena stadium.
