FC Barcelona Successful Season Review 2010-2011

FC Barcelona started their 2010-11 season with the threat of the special one, Jose Mourinho as he eliminated Barcelona last year from the Champions League Final by his unprecedented tactics. But Barca have once again proven their outstanding class by winning the Double Crown – La Liga – three times in a row with two games to spare and the big Champions League Crown – twice in three years by teaching them very good football opponent. a lesson Furthermore, Barça made an impressive record of 28 unbeaten games and 16 consecutive league wins in the 2010-2011 La Liga season. Barça is now about “Dream Team.”

La Liga

Barca were dramatically beaten 2-0 at the Camp Nou in their second game against new signing Hercules CF! It was a shock not a fact that Barça experienced that in their following matches. They managed to win their 3rd La Liga Crown in a row with two games to spare.

A series of “El Clasicos”

Five “El Clasico” in season and four of them occurred in April-May alone within a time span of 18 days. In recent history only in 2001-02 the two Giants met four times in a season and before that when they clashed more or as evenly as this season I really don’t remember.

The 1st“El Clasico” of the season which took place on the 29th of November. The new coach of Madrid, their excellent performance in the league before this game, the fatigue of the Spanish players after the world cup etc. are big issues before the game. But as soon as the referee blew his whistle to start the fight that’s the beauty of football that was captured by none other than the Barca players again. Barca gave their fans an unforgettable victory, Pum Seren, a 5-0 victory against their eternal rival at the Camp Nou on the 111th birthday of the best club in the world. Barca are at the top of the table, 8 points ahead of Madrid with this win and the front position was as stable as Everest until the end of the season.

The 2nd“El Clasico” a 1-1 draw at Santiago Bernabeu while both Messi scored for the first time against Mourinho so did Ronaldo against Barcelona after he arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu. After the game Barça were also eight points ahead of Madrid.

The 3rd“El Clasico” was “Copa Del Ray Final” so it was a big game for both of them. Mourinho stuck to his highly defensive strategy and finally got a win and a trophy while Ronaldo scored in 102 minutes at Mestalla. Barca had 70% of the first half but no real effort before the goal post happened. Barça improved in the second half, they created chances but it was all tied and it was 0-0 after the 90 minutes. Ronaldo then scored in 102 minutes and this was the decider as Barca failed to score but kept pushing.

The 4th “El Clasico” was the highly anticipated semi-final of the Champions League. The very first leg was at Santiago Bernabeu. Mourinho harshly criticized Pep Guardiola when Guardiola commented on the disqualification of a goal during the Copa Del Rey Final. Right after Mourinho left the press conference Guardiola answered her fast and furious as never before as he used the “F word.” This event added extra spice before the battle. On the battlefield we saw a reflection of Guardiola’s anger while the Barca players rushed all together towards the referee as soon as there was any foul from any of the Madrid players. Barcelona played their natural attacking game and Madrid stuck to their defensive plan. It was 0-0 after half time. When two teams headed to the changing room, Barca goalkeeper Pinto received a red card and there was a conflict between some of the players of the two teams. On the hour mark Pepe fouled Dani Alves and the referee booked him with a straight red card – Barca’s plan worked. But from the replay we could easily see that it was a masterful act by Dani Alves. Mourinho was also shown a red card when he gave the referee an illegal gesture. Then Barça took advantage of 10 men and Messi scored after 76 minutes and he doubled it with pure magic in 87 minutes and the latter was undoubtedly one of the best goals in the history of the Champions League. After full time it was a huge 2-0 advantage and Barça were almost through to the final.

The 5th “El Clasico” a brutal formality as it was more than impossible to keep Barca away from Wembley when they had a 2-0 away goal advantage. It was a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou. Barca scored first and Madrid tied. Mourinho wasn’t even in the gallery during the game. Barca went to Wembly.

Champions League

It would be an injustice to Barca if I don’t mention the game against Arsenal. Cesc Fabregas once again played for the losing team. Arsenal had a 2-1 home advantage but they did not use it at the Camp Nou where they were humiliated last year by 4-1 and every goal was scored by the little wizard from Argentina Messi. This year Messi made a difference once again, his first goal showed the world that his skill is limitless. Arsenal made an incredible record breaking the record of more than a thousand games in the Champions League. In this game they couldn’t take a single shot at the target! The score line was 3-1 and the only goal was an own goal scored by Sergio Busquets.

Champions League Final – Obviously considered the biggest game of the season. The Barça players described the match as the last final of their lifetime in the Champions League as Guardiola did back in 1992 at Wembley where Barça had won their first ever Champions League Final Trophy. Sir Alex Ferguson labeled it “The Final of the Decade.” Some said it would “dj vu” from the 2008-09 season others said ManU had improved. When the first ten minutes of the game started ManU gave Barca a very good challenge but again that’s the beauty of football at its highest level, Manu became a bus stop once again. The game ended 3-1 and it could have been a lot worse. The game is now considered the best ever Champions League final in the Football category by any team.

Finally, It was another successful mission from FC Barcelona. They won the Double and created a few team and individual records this season. They are now very close to the “Dream Team” while some people have already expressed that they are a “Dream Team” or better than that! But one thing is certain that Lionel Messi is getting closer and closer to stop repeating the question “Who is the best player of all time Pele or Maradona?”
