3 Golden Rules to Become the Best Footballer (Soccer Player) You Can Be
In this article I will introduce you to 3 golden rules that will help you become the best soccer player/footballer you can be.
1. Think about your football in a useful, positive way
How you think about your football day to day determines how you feel about your football in general, and how you feel about your football has a big influence on how quickly you learn in training and how well you perform on match day.
I spend many hours every week teaching Premier League footballers how to think effectively after training and before match day. Here is one technique you can use:
I want you to write down your top three games of all time. Write them down in detail just as we have discussed before. This will give you something to come back to every day which will help you build and maintain a strong football image. It will help you manage the memories you have of your football.
When writing your top three games – remember key moments. Key moments such as runs you made, tackles, blocks, passes and headers you won. Add feelings to your story – “I felt strong, confident and powerful” and “I felt invincible”.
These are exciting images to remember and reinforce. If your friends or loved ones were watching you – what do you think they would have seen? Write down their point of view too.
When you spend time off the field reminding yourself of the times you perform at your best, you’re feeding your brain and body confidently with pictures and images. The footballer who commits to this technique on a daily basis will build self-belief and feel great going into their training session and matches – giving themselves a better chance to learn faster and play better with more consistency.
2. Exercise with a purpose
It’s nice to have an abundance of ability in football, but no matter how talented you are, it’s the quality of your training that determines the trajectory of your football. In fact, this is so important that I advise clients to stop using the word training and start calling it exercise. And ‘any old habit’ is not enough – deliberate practice is what matters.
Deliberate practice isn’t easy and it starts in the brain. He is not a football player doing an hour’s practice, doing a few high fives on each side, and having fun with friends. It is mentally and physically taxing. It’s a focused, iterative type of exercise where you’re always monitoring your performance, correcting, experimenting, listening to direct and constant feedback, and always pushing beyond what you’ve already done. to achieve.
Next time you go to exercise – make sure you set yourself a goal, preferably a specific area you want to improve. Concentrate fully and push yourself out of your comfort zone by trying the things you don’t get easily on the field.
3. Control the things that can be controlled
The biggest killer in football is distraction. Taking your mind off the game can have dangerous consequences. A proper focus of attention in football starts with an understanding of what you can and cannot control. There are plenty of things in football that you cannot control and if you focus on them you can easily become distracted while you are playing.
The most obvious ones are the weather and the condition of the field. It’s fairly obvious that you can’t control those aspects. Yet how many football players focus on them? How many times have I walked onto a pitch with the team before a game and heard someone say “I can’t believe how bad the pitch is. How can we play well on this?” Where do you think the focus of this soccer player’s performance will be during the game? Do you think he might be easily distracted?
Similar to the state of the pitch I have heard footballers complain about the weather. Last season a player came up to me on Thursday and said he hoped it wasn’t going to rain during the game on Saturday because he had decided it was rubbish playing in the rain. I noticed, of course, that if he wanted a career in professional football in England he would probably have to get used to playing in the rain (it rains a lot in England!). Joking aside do you think this player’s mind going into the game is helpful? The focus of his performance was inevitably going to be damaged if it rained – something he couldn’t control.
Before the next time you play, identify some of the things you can control such as your ‘body language’ and ‘how confidently you carry out your role’ and try to focus on these. Try to avoid focusing your attention on the things you cannot control – they will only divert your mind from what is important during the game.
Of course, there is more to getting the mental side of performance going, but these three rules represent excellent foundations. They will help put you on the path to becoming the best football or soccer player you can be!
